Spirit of Service
Spirit of Service (SOS) is an annual spring community improvement project jointly sponsored by RMDC, along with partners including Anderson ZurMuehlen and Company, Employee Benefit Resources LLP, the City of Helena, Wal-Mart, Heritage Propane, Morrison-Mairerle Inc., American Federal Savings Bank, Student Assistance Foundation, St. Peter’s Hospital, Costco, Allegra Print and Imaging, and Mountain West Bank.
Employees from partner businesses and agencies devote a day in May to trimming, weeding, scrubbing, sanding, and painting for two or three dozen homeowners who are not physically able to tackle such chores themselves.
Sponsors provide cash support, tools, materials, and the work crews for the projects that to which they are assigned. Typically, crews remove trash, clean-out rain gutters, cut grass, trim hedges, wash windows, and paint—all exterior tasks. SOS crews assist a different group of properties owners each year.
Many other community organizations and businesses contribute materials or services to this project.
SOS recipients must own their home, reside there, and be unable to accomplish yard work or maintenance themselves. All SOS assistance is free to homeowners. There’s no income criterion.
An application for SOS assistance in the upcoming year is available here.
