Caird Redevelopment Project

RMDC Awarded Neighborhood Stabilization Funds for Caird Site Clean Up

Helena MT       On August 3, 2010, Rocky Mountain Development Council (RMDC) learned that the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Montana Department of Commerce (DOC) awarded Lewis & Clark County two million dollars for RMDC’s use to acquire, clean up and begin redevelop of the Caird Engineering property for senior housing and other uses. The funds awarded by HUD and DOC come from the third round of Neighborhood Stabilization dollars allocated to Montana.

After purchasing the property, RMDC anticipates that demolition and Brownsfield site contamination clean up will take from six to nine months and employ sizeable private clean-up crews. While that work proceeds, RMDC will finish the tax and funding package needed to begin construction of the first 30-unit senior housing facility on the southern edge of the site. RMDC will continue community conversations about additional project phases including good ways to use the Montana Avenue portions of the site.

RMDC is now partnering with Helena Housing Authority (HHA) in several capacities and has joined conversations among institutional neighbo

rhood partners including HHA, the Helena School District, UM-Helena College of Technology,  and the City.
